Fireguard has been fully tested for all timber joisted ceiling constructions.

Conventional timber systems

Fireguard has been fully tested for 30, 60 and 90 minute fire ceilings.

Part B of the Building Regulations determines the ceiling type that is required depending on the type of building under construction and associated usage.  The ceiling types are designed to provide protection to the floor above in the case of a fire for a specified duration (30, 60 or 90 minutes).  Using Fireguard from JCC ensures that the ceiling maintains its integrity for the duration when downlights are installed.

A 30 minute ceiling is typically a 2-storey house (detached or terrace), flats or maisonette.

A 60 minute ceiling is typically used between a shop and flat above, or houses and flats with the floor between 5m – 10m above ground, and multiple occupancy dwellings.

A 90 minute ceiling is typically used on buildings with basements of a depth greater than 10m, or flats over 30m above ground.

I-joist timber systems

JCC were one of the first lighting manufacturers to fully test downlights for 30 and 60 minute fire ceilings on I-Joist timber systems.

I-joists offer the modern builder an alternative to solid beam constructions.  These products are manufactured from laminating layers of wood together to produce I-joists.  These joists can be made using less timber than their solid counterparts as a result of the extra strength gained from the laminating process.  This makes them lighter and easier to manoeuvre, together with the benefit of being able to span greater widths without undue flex in the floor system.

However, as these timbers are thinner there is much less material to resist the passage of fire and thus luminaires that are suitable for solid timber floor constructions are not necessarily suitable for I-joist.  We have spent considerable resources working in conjunction with BRE and Chiltern Fire International to ensure our luminaires are suitable for the majority of I-Joist floor systems.
